The Alkalizing Effect of Lemons

A lot of people I talk to think of lemons as quite acidic in the body. It would seem like they would be because they are chemically acidic, however, lemons have an alkalizing effect on the body because of their high concentration of sodium and potassium bicarbonate salts. They also contain an abundance of oxygen!
We want our bodies to be in an alkaline state (as opposed to an acidic one) for vibrant health to exist. Do you remember the pH scale from chemistry class? It looks like this:
The closer your body is to a pH of 7, the higher your level of health, well-being, and resistance to disease!! We all want that!
It’s easy to check the pH of your saliva and/or urine with inexpensive pH strips. They can be ordered online or found at your local drugstore. It is best to perform this simple test first thing in the morning, before you’ve had any food or drink. Your doctor can also perform a blood pH test for you.
If your pH is too acidic, just begin eating more alkalizing foods or taking a few teaspoons of mineral salts or baking soda in water.
Lemons are one of those alkalizing foods and are usually readily available. Choose organic, if at all possible. I like to use ionized and alkalized water to drink, slightly warmed, and add a half of a fresh, organic lemon squeezed in. Some of the benefits of adding lemon daily to your diet, in addition to alkalizing the body are:
- Digestive assistance such as easing heartburn, bloating and other digestion problems
- Cleansing and stimulating your kidneys and liver
- Providing Vitamin C
- Providing potassium, magnesium, and calcium
- Acting as a great skin astringent and cleanser
So, an easy addition to your daily routine that increases vibrance and health is the amazing, alkalizing lemon! (Additional resources below)
